Everett Mercer remained by Selene Lancaster's side, his presence unwavering.

Moments later, when Selene turned to search for Damien Harrington, she noticed he was no longer standing with Camille Hartwell. Instead, Camille was engaged in conversation with Hugh Rhodes.

Given their longstanding acquaintance, it was only natural for Everett and Hugh to exchange pleasantries in such a public setting.

"Mr. Rhodes, may I introduce—" Everett began formally.

Hugh smiled warmly, interrupting gently. "Ms. Lancaster and I are already acquainted."

Selene offered a polite greeting, her smile perfectly measured.

Hugh acknowledged her with a courteous nod before turning his attention back to Camille. His voice softened noticeably. "Camille, have you been keeping busy lately?"

Though the summit had concluded, they remained in full view of numerous attendees.

The marked difference in Hugh's demeanor between his interactions with Camille and Selene spoke volumes.

His fondness for Camille was unmistakable, displayed without reservation.

"Yes, quite busy," Camille replied simply.

She couldn't ignore Hugh's obvious preference.

Previously, their interactions had been ordinary. But Everett's sudden appearance reminded her that Hugh was Felix Rhodes's father.

Considering Felix's persistent advances, Camille felt no discomfort around Hugh. After all, nothing substantial had transpired between them.

While Hugh wasn't overtly cold toward Selene, the contrast in his treatment was stark.

After their initial exchange, Hugh showed no further interest in conversing with Selene. He made no effort to establish rapport, let alone demonstrate any admiration.

Had he wished to show support, he might have at least acknowledged Vertex Dynamics, the company Selene represented.

Her invitation to this summit should have warranted some recognition.

Noticing this subtle dismissal, Selene's smile faltered slightly.

Everett seemed oblivious to Hugh's coolness toward Selene, but he did notice Hugh's clear desire to continue speaking with Camille.

Despite his personal dislike for Camille, Everett wouldn't dream of interrupting Hugh. After brief pleasantries, he guided Selene away.

Selene observed that Everett's opinion of Camille remained unchanged.

A thought occurred to her. "It seems both Mr. Rhodes and your father hold Ms. Hartwell in high regard," she remarked casually. "Recently, Damien and I happened upon Ms. Hartwell and Gabriel Ashcroft playing golf with Mr. Rhodes and your father..."

Everett's eyebrows shot up. "My father and Hugh played golf with Camille and Gabriel?"

"Yes," Selene confirmed. "They appeared quite familiar, actually. It didn't seem like their first meeting."

She feigned surprise. "You weren't aware your father knew Ms. Hartwell?"

Everett frowned, shaking his head. "No, he never mentioned it."

This revelation intrigued Selene.

During their initial meeting, she'd noticed Marcus Mercer's apparent fondness for Camille. She'd assumed he would have spoken of her to Everett, potentially altering Everett's perception.

But apparently not...

Hugh, ever the busy official, soon concluded his conversation with Camille after a few more minutes. Camille likewise moved on to other matters.

Later, Camille seized a quiet moment to slip away from the bustling hall.

Noticing her departure, Tristan Rutherford's expression shifted subtly. He turned to Damien beside him. "Damien, I have matters to attend to. I'll take my leave now."

Damien glanced at him. "Not joining me for dinner?"

Tristan shook his head. "Another time."

"Very well," Damien conceded easily. "We'll catch up when you're free."

"Certainly."
