She Left the CEO and Reclaimed Her Empire

Chapter 214

The idea barely formed in her mind when Damien let out a low chuckle. "I might not be the greatest player, Gabriel," he said, his fingers hovering over the chessboard. "But if you keep holding back, I won't take it as kindness."

Gabriel Ashcroft flashed a knowing smile. "It's been months since my last proper game. Consider this my warm-up round."

Damien snorted, deliberately ignoring the obvious lie.

Truth be told, he was formidable. The match stretched over fifteen intense minutes before he finally conceded defeat - by a single pawn's advantage.

Rather than frustration, Damien felt exhilaration. This was the first time in years someone had genuinely challenged him. "Again," he demanded, already resetting the pieces.

Gabriel obliged without hesitation.

This time, Gabriel played with ruthless precision. Damien's eyebrows shot up at the aggressive opening move. "That's more like it," he murmured appreciatively.

Gabriel merely smiled. "Just keeping you on your toes, Mr. Harrington."

The truth was, Damien hadn't enjoyed losing this much in decades. Each defeat only fueled his competitive spirit.

By the third match, Damien slammed his palm on the table. "No more kid gloves! I may be old, but I'm not senile yet."

Gabriel held up both hands in mock surrender. "You misunderstand me completely, sir."

Damien waved him off, laser-focused on the board.

Predictably, he lost again.

With deliberate calm, he placed his king on its side. "Well played," he conceded. Then, raising his voice to the gathered spectators, "Anyone else care to try? I'm not asking you to beat him - just make the bastard work for it."
